Music means many different things to different people and is often the medium in which people typically come together. It can be a clap of the hand, and beat of a drum or blow of a whistle. But to Renae , a first year Laurier Brantford student, she believes that music is something inherent - which is why she chose the wide subject of music for her internet blog. She says music has, “always had a big influence on me; it’s a big part of my life.” When asked why she found it such a large part of her life, she stressed that it was because both her parents were both musically inclined. Which was, in most part due to her Jamaican background, to which had a large influence in her choice to get into music at the age of 3. “I play piano, and I played clarinet in middle school,” The piano, which she says she still plays, she says, “it’s my favourite.” Although, it wasn’t the same story years ago. Renae admits that she didn’t like piano in the early stages of learning it, but finally gave in after it began to come to her quite naturally.
Now having chosen to write about the subject of music, the question of the favourite genre was inevitable. It didn’t take long for her to formulate an answer, and quickly answered that she was not picky and was fairly open minded when it came to the topics of genre. Though, she does have her preferences, “Old R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop and sometimes Rap,” she expressed. The same sort of answer came when she was asked about her favourite artist. She was visibly thoughtful when she answered and admitted that it was indeed a hard question to answer and said quote, “my musical interests tend to change quite frequently – I’ll be really into one artist, but I’ll come off it quickly.”
As Renae is indeed a Journalism major, I asked her whether she could see herself writing in music, and she responded with a yes. Mainly because she thought that musical artists had such an ear for detail and she thought it was alluring the way they created different musical styles so often. She spoke of how it was fascinating the way music evolved and that there were so many areas in music left to be uncovered. She made it very clear that the musical ‘experience’ was, “different for everybody,” and that, “everybody has a different musical experience.” Another reason why she could most definitely see herself writing in that area one day.
And as music has one personal meaning to Renae, it’s bound to have countless of other connotations to other people. Her view on the subject, is only one of the probably thousands of them out there. But to her, it will only have about one. And that’s the only one that matters.
