Learn the Lyrics!

We all have that one friend who's constantly singing, but can never sing the right lyrics. In some cases, you might be that friend! However, you have nothing to fear, because Lyrics.com is here!

I don't think this site needs to be explained in full detail but I will mention some of the more interesting parts of it. Obviously, Lyrics.com is where you can find lyrics for many songs for many genres.

The homepage shows songs that users logged in are currently listening to, new releases, and popular artists. There's a convenient alphabet navigator which allows you to click on a letter and browse all the artists whose name begins with the specified letter.

For one letter, there will be thousands of possible artists, so you can narrow your search down with another alphabet navigator which uses two letters instead of one.

I honestly think that using the alphabet navigator is time consuming, so for ease of use, you can simply type in the artist's name in the search box on the left hand corner, and results will show all the lyrics they have for that one person.

No longer will you have to make up your own words to suit the song you're attempting to sing; you can find it all at Lyrics.com!

For the Hip-Hop Lovers: DatPiff

DatPiff.com is a website dedicated to hip-hop, where you can read hip-hop news, watch videos, and listen to mixtapes. For people trying to get into the hip-hop culture, this is a perfect place to see who's hot and gain some inspiration from others.

On the site, you can use the top bar to navigate and it's very straightforward. In listening to mixtapes, you can listen to the whole thing, and if you become a member, you're able to download the whole mixtape if you really enjoy it. Also, there's an option of becoming a premium member (which you unfortunately have to pay for) but that comes with options of downloading one song from a mixtape instead of the whole thing, unlimited downloads as compared to a basic member. You can also read news on your favourite hip-hop artists, updates on feuds and also explore newly released singles.

If you're the type of person who likes listening to hip-hop that isn't mainstream, I would recommend DatPiff because it's a site that will allow you to listen to plenty of artists who don't necessarily have celebrity status.

Flow 93.5!

The popular radio station situated in the heart of Toronto, the New Flow 93.5 has a website which is just as entertaining to those who like to listen in.

Here, you can check out the different shows that come on the station at different times. When you wake up, you can tune in to listen to JJ & Melanie in the Morning, or at work you can wait for the Midday Break that plays tunes to get you through your day. On Sundays, you can mix it up a little with Soca Therapy and Riddim Track. The best thing about this site is that you can listen live online so you don't need to worry about missing your shows!

The website also lets you look at events and concerts you can attend and know about well in advance. If events and concerts are not your thing but you like contests and winning things, the site lets you know all the contests going in on at the time which gives so many people the opportunity to win stuff!

For those who listen to the station religiously, your favourite on-air personalities also have their own spot on the website, and you can check out some of their blogs. What I personally find to be quite useful is the fact that the website makes a list of all the songs played that day, and shows what songs are in what order in the countdowns and also the songs that are in the top 20.

Overall, a pretty cool site!

TuneFind

I found this website called "TuneFind", and it is especially useful for those people who know how the song sounds, but can never remember who sings it and what the title is.

What the site essentially does is it allows people to find songs that they hear on TV(in shows) and in movies without having to go through the hassle of racking their brain in hopes of the name of the song magically coming to them. On the home page, right away it displays two categories in their respective columns; Recent TV shows and Recent Movies.

Under TV shows, you'll see a list of popular shows and a couple songs underneath it that have played in the most recent episodes. The movie category essentially does the same thing, showing music underneath recent movies that are still in theatres.

The left navigation bar allows users to to search for music by entering a name (I would assume any keyword that is relevant) and browsing the available TV shows and movies listed in their catalogue.

There is also the option of clicking most popular which takes you to two other columns that show 2009's most popular songs, and all-time popular songs. Underneath those columns you can also find which artists were popular for this year, and who has been deemed all-time popular.

Just like almost every other user-friendly site, people are able to join and keep track of their submissions to the website.

Music Dot Com

Music.com is a website where you can find almost any music video or audio track for nearly any genre. This site, dedicated solely to music (obviously), features the newest and most popular songs in recent times.

Unlike YouTube, when you click on a music video to watch, there is more than enough information about the artist, the work that they've done (their albums, the year it was produced including the track list), and the sidebar even recommends other videos that would interest the audience based off of the video they're currently watching.

The track list offers the option of reading lyrics to the song (if it's available) and also the option to purchase the song online which is convenient for the impulsive music fiend. At the bottom of the page is a small biography on the artist with their picture which, in limited detail, describes their journey in becoming an icon.

Lower on the page, located on the right side, the website also tells you what the top ten songs are, and what the music pick of the week is. It's pretty amazing considering what you are able to access without the obligation to sign up, but on the other hand, there are benefits of joining; such as personally recommended playlists based on the videos you have watched in the past.

For the music obsessed individual, you can find pretty much everything you would want to know about an artist just by clicking a link to their video.

I would recommend this site to anyone who wants to watch high quality music videos without having to conduct long, strenuous, frustrated searches. Check it out ! Cool Music Site

A Little Bit About Myself

This should probably have been the first post, but since I like to be different, I'll post it now. The following is an interview with me conducted by one of my peers about my favourite topic; music.

Music means many different things to different people and is often the medium in which people typically come together. It can be a clap of the hand, and beat of a drum or blow of a whistle. But to Renae , a first year Laurier Brantford student, she believes that music is something inherent - which is why she chose the wide subject of music for her internet blog. She says music has, “always had a big influence on me; it’s a big part of my life.” When asked why she found it such a large part of her life, she stressed that it was because both her parents were both musically inclined. Which was, in most part due to her Jamaican background, to which had a large influence in her choice to get into music at the age of 3. “I play piano, and I played clarinet in middle school,” The piano, which she says she still plays, she says, “it’s my favourite.” Although, it wasn’t the same story years ago. Renae admits that she didn’t like piano in the early stages of learning it, but finally gave in after it began to come to her quite naturally.

Now having chosen to write about the subject of music, the question of the favourite genre was inevitable. It didn’t take long for her to formulate an answer, and quickly answered that she was not picky and was fairly open minded when it came to the topics of genre. Though, she does have her preferences, “Old R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop and sometimes Rap,” she expressed. The same sort of answer came when she was asked about her favourite artist. She was visibly thoughtful when she answered and admitted that it was indeed a hard question to answer and said quote, “my musical interests tend to change quite frequently – I’ll be really into one artist, but I’ll come off it quickly.”

As Renae is indeed a Journalism major, I asked her whether she could see herself writing in music, and she responded with a yes. Mainly because she thought that musical artists had such an ear for detail and she thought it was alluring the way they created different musical styles so often. She spoke of how it was fascinating the way music evolved and that there were so many areas in music left to be uncovered. She made it very clear that the musical ‘experience’ was, “different for everybody,” and that, “everybody has a different musical experience.” Another reason why she could most definitely see herself writing in that area one day.

And as music has one personal meaning to Renae, it’s bound to have countless of other connotations to other people. Her view on the subject, is only one of the probably thousands of them out there. But to her, it will only have about one. And that’s the only one that matters.
